Behind the scenes with on-air personality Dub
We listen to radio to wake up in the morning, get us through the day, wind down at the end of the day, or have fun with friends.
Who are the people we listen to? How did they get started in the industry? What does it take to be a popular disc jockey?
Walter Olazaba, also known as ‘Yo Boy Dub,’ is an on-air personality for Q97.1 FM.
He says it all has to do with how much work you want to put into your craft. He says it’s harder than it seems.
Olazaba says, “To be an on-air personality it takes drive and passion for music. I’ve been doing this for a long time and I still have fun so I think that’s important. You have to love what you do, you have to love being on the radio, you have to love talking to people, even if people throw shade at you, you still gotta love it.”
He says his job is more than just talking into a microphone – its having a conversation with people. His recommendations for anyone interested in the job: You should be interesting, and talk about things your listeners want to hear.
It’s not a cake walk. He worked days and nights to get to the position he is in now. But, with that hard work, dedication and patience, he says he now has full control and understands what the listens want.
“When it comes to music,” Olazaba says,” I want to make sure it touches people. Not anything depressing just feel – good music.”
