Hard work and fun tricks: Justice does it all
Meet Justice! An 8-year-old gelding that was certified in April and has joined the mounted patrol unit, however, he isn’t just any horse.
“Justice is a little bit of a unique horse, he is very personable, he likes people, he likes the attention and he likes to visit and the time that we bought him he also came with the ability to do a few tricks,” said Lieutenant Kathy Curtice.
He learned those tricks from his old owner and likes to show them off in public as a way to show respect for his community and the United States Flag. He also helps the public see the mounted patrol unit in a less intimidating way.
“The kids love him; everybody loves him so there is a big PR aspect to it. Although our primary focus is patrol we are also doing the community contact. We hand out stickers and cards and people take photos,” said Deputy Christian Lightner.
Regardless of his talents he is a hard working horse and has done an incredible job while being on duty alongside Deputy Lightner.
“The arrest are his best work, because that is what we are all about at the end of the day we are still here for a law enforcement capacity and when we are out doing the public appearances or talking about our job to the community that is the job that we are talking about,” said Curtice.
Justice has many years to come with the patrol unit and he has already brought so much joy to his team and community. If you want to keep up with Justice you can follow his very own Instagram page @JusticeTheSheriffHorse.
“Being on this unit and riding Justice is an absolute blast – it’s a ton of fun – it’s a lot of work but it’s a ton of fun,” Lightner says.
