Fresno State Ice Cream – A Cool Business
Have you ever wondered how ice cream is made, packaged and sold? Fresno State students know because they do it every semester as part of class.
Stephanie Santora, Fresno State Creamery employee said, “I think the coolest part about it is that you learn all these things in class and sometimes you don’t really get to experience it, and so knowing I have this experience makes it so enjoyable because I know this is what I want to do.”
Food Science majors who are interested in creating delicious treats are getting hands – on experience alongside creamery manager, Daniel Avila who has been in the game for a while.
“So everything is pretty hands -on here. We don’t pre-order pre-label containers since we make so many different flavors and different sizes. We basically have our main label where we’re able to type what flavor we want it to be, and then we also type up our ingredients on a separate label and that way if we decide to improve flavor all we have to do is change the ingredients on that one label or if we want to create a new flavor we don’t have to order new packaging it’s something we can create very easily,” said Avila.
But what’s the next step in this tasty process to getting the ice cream to customer? Fresno Staten students pack it up and move it out, so it can be sold to the Gibson Farm Market.
Customer Julie Wolfernberger always gets a taste of her favorite flavor when she comes into town. “This is caramel toffee, and it’s really good. All ice cream companies should make it but they don’t, so I only get it when I’m here to see my aunt,” she said.
You can grab a scoop, pint or quart of Fresno State’s ice cream at the Gibson Farm Market which offers 35 different flavors.
