Professional Dunker Jumps in Local Rec League

A lot of people sign up for community recreation leagues to compete with friends or try to re-live those old sports memories. However, there’s one local basketball league where the competition may not seem level because there’s a professional dunker in the gym.

It’s not every day you get the chance to play alongside a professional dunker, but for one Clovis, CA rec league team they know they have someone waiting on the bench to put on a dunk contest of their own. Every Thursday night at the City of Clovis Recreation Center, players compete in five on five basketball games, and if you stay long enough you’ll be able to see Jonathan Clark jump out of the gym.

“After games I would just dunk because I could jump high and I had this skill,” says Clark. “More and more, those dunks turned into I want to do this dunk. I want to go between the leg. Once I got between the legs I want to do a 360 between the legs and it kind of just spiraled out of control with that.”

Clark puts on a show for the crowd, but even his teammates can get caught up in the hype. “It’s definitely a pleasure playing with him. I wish I was as tall as he was,” says Reyes Soria, Clark’s teammate.

“It’s awesome to be able to play with such a phenomenal athlete and anywhere you throw it up near the rim he just goes up and gets it. It’s super exciting. He brings excitement to the game. It’s a lot of fun,” adds Eric Mullins, another teammate.

Clark competes in dunk contests for prize money on the weekends up and down the state of California. He stays active by playing at the city of Clovis Recreation Center and is constantly challenging himself with new dunks.
