FUSD Revises Dress Code
This Spring 2018 a student was suspended from a Fresno area middle school because of his haircut.
Erika Pagget’s son was suspended from Tenaya middle school because of his haircut. She says her son had just received an honor roll award the day before he was suspended.
Fresno Unified School Superintendent, Bob Nelson says that situation made him think it was time to revamp the school dress code to fit modern times.
Pagget is glad to hear that Fresno Unified will update the current dress code. “It’s more than time to do something to take a look at it to and make some necessary revisions. Trends have changed, so I was pleased to hear that,” she says.
Carrie Weisgerber, a local hairstylist, is also glad there will be revisions made to the current dress code.
“This is a new season, new time. People should be able to express their talent and their skills. I think it’s a great idea to get updated to current time,” Weisgerber says.
For some, the Fresno Unified dress code might seem a bit outdated, while others believe that it should be followed. Superintendent, Bob Nelson, believes the 15-year-old dress code could use some updating, to keep up with modern times.
“The revised dress code will just be a little bit more in tune with the modern era. We’ve had some issue where people were thinking hey this is not the most culturally sensitive response, so just looking at that. Making sure that it reflects the diversity that represents our community,” said Nelson.
Fresno Unified will begin making changes to the dress code during the summer to be ready for the new school 2018-2019 school year.
