The Tiny Home Movement
Living large is out of style. Tiny homes are the new thing, and they’re popping up everywhere.
The average home in the United States is a little over 2,000 square feet, but these tiny homes size up at a whopping 300 to 400 square feet. For Jason Englebright, tiny homes became a family business for him and his wife. KJE, named after their son, builds the homes in Fresno.
“It’s kind of a smaller house like the title says,” Englebright said. “It works out for people that are you know, don’t have as much money, works out for you know living in smaller places. They’re energy efficient.”
Englebright says tiny homes are also cost-efficient.
“Cost of home and cost of property nowadays is rising so it’s a little more cost efficient if you will,” said KJE Employee Louie Barraza. The average tiny home cashes in at around $80,000 at KJE, which is $100,000 cheaper than the average traditional home.
At KJE, it takes a lot of work to build tiny homes. They all start off as a simple trailer and end up as a home with a really low price. For tiny home builders, that’s what the tiny home movement is all about.
“I think it’s a great thing for our economy. I also think it’s a great thing for our earth. It’s just trying to help people who don’t make a lot of money be able to own their own home,” Englebright said.
Tiny homes could be the key alternative you’re looking for when it comes to shelter.
