BLOOD DRIVE HELD IN HONOR OF CHIEF HUERTA
In September, Fresno State hosted a blood drive in honor of Chief David Huerta. Special Projects Coordinator Taylan Bennett hosted the event. The chief’s daughter Carragan was also there in support of her father. Ralph Ramirez helped recruit people and stressed the valley’s need for donor blood.
The school hoped to achieve a big turn-out. Bennett said “we’re hoping to get a lot of donors in and through here. We’re thankful for the blood drive staff, and all the people that are out here today to support Fresno State’s blood drive.” Central California Blood Center brought along a blood donor recruiter to help bring in more people. Ralph Ramirez stressed
just how valuable the blood was to the people of the central valley, “The blood’s being used by obviously those who are in need, due to low inventory, blood is always needed on a regular basis. So, there’s one of every seven people that enter a hospital, will be in the need of blood and blood is needed one day every two seconds.”
This blood drive impacted not just the students, and David Huerta, but it also impacted Huerta’s daughter and family. Carragan Huerta helped set up the blood drive in her father’s honor. “He really grateful and he’s honestly really honored t
hat we did it in his name, he, my whole family has seen first hand the impact that blood and organ donation can have on people, and it really does save lives. So, he feels really good about knowing that we’re giving back in some way and that we’re going to be able to save someone else’s life.”
Fresno State announced there was a “a huge outpouring of support” for the blood drive. If you missed this drive, the next one will be held in November.
