BUY LOCAL AT THE GIBSON MARKET
Surrounded by the rich agricultural influences of the central valley, many students pursue a degree in agriculture at Fresno State. The Gibson Farm Market gives students the chance to sell their campus-grown produce to the Fresno community.
The university is well known for its agricultural program. From live-stock to produce, a majority of Fresno State’s 363 acres is dedicated to giving agricultural students the means to flourish in their field.
Sophia Armendariz, an employee at the Gibson Market, explained how the market partners with different programs at Fresno State to get their products out to the community. “We have the different entities on campus, so we’ll have the viticulture the winery, we have the meat labs,” explained Armendariz, “So they all make or grow the items for us to sell.”
Many people come to the market to buy products like meat, wine, cheese, milk, coffee, Fresno State ice cream and even pumpkins just in time for Halloween. Every product sold at the market is made on campus by students.
The Gibson Market is another way for people to buy local, which is becoming a priority for many consumers. The market is one of many farmers’ markets in the Fresno area. Shopping at the Gibson Market directly supports the university’s agricultural department.
Nathaniel Bryant, a customer at the market, said that shopping local has become a very important aspect to him when looking for produce. “Buying locals great. I love the idea and concept of it. It’s better to go fresh from farm to table,” said Bryant. “Doubly so here at the market with the student involvement it’s great that the Ag Business community and the agricultural business. These are the future farmers of America,” he continued.
The Gibson Farm Market is located across from Fresno State on Chestnut avenue next to Campus Point. It is open seven days a week from eleven in the morning to four in the afternoon.
