ON-CAMPUS VS OFF-CAMPUS STUDENT WORKERS
Many Fresno State students work in order to support themselves while going to school. Some work two to three jobs and take a full load of classes.
Brenton Vargas works as a mentor for the Upward Bound Program at Fresno State. He says his campus job works perfectly with his school schedule, and he doesn’t have to worry about being called in for extra hours.
“Having a set schedule gives me the liberty to plan out my week and know what to expect,” Vargas says.
Jeffery works off campus at Starbucks. He says he is always in a rush, whether it’s to class or work. His job doesn’t leave him much time to focus on school work because of the hours and covering other co-workers shifts.
“Because of my early morning work schedule I had to set up my classes all at night and then still have to be up early again for work the next day,” Jeffery said.
Elijah Surall, financial lead coach at Fresno State’s Money Management Center, suggests students try to get an on-campus job for convenience and the best schedule. He says working on campus has addional perks that don’t revolve around the pay or work schedule.
“Just being around professionals and making connections is the best benefit with working on-campus,” Surall says.
