FRESNO STATE TEAMS UP WITH THE BIG FRESNO FAIR TO GIVE BACK
Fresno State partnered with the Big Fresno Fair to put on the “Feed the Need” food drive. This was the third year that the drive took place in the Red Lot at Fresno State, on the corner of Cedar and Barstow.
Volunteers accepted donations for twelve hours. Fresno State athletes, coaches, and students collected and sorted items to help the cause. Fresno State First Lady, Mary Castro, greeted donors and handed out tickets to the Big Fresno Fair in exchange for every 10-can contribution.
In 2017, the drive at Fresno State collected nearly 40,000 pounds of food. This year, they were looking to double that amount.
“So it’s been a great day, lots of volunteers, lots of athletic students here helping and so far so good. We’re looking to get close to meeting our goal of 80 thousand pounds,” said Debbie Nalchajian-Cohen of Cohen Communications.
Fresno State also partnered up with a few other companies. Dutch Bros. Coffee gave out free coffee vouchers to the first 100 donors, and Maya Cinemas gave out free popcorn vouchers at random.
Fresno State athletes distributed tickets to the Fresno State football game against Toledo, the game that took place that upcoming weekend.
“It’s our third year in the Red Lot. We were on campus before that. This is an annual event that we hope to grow even bigger every year,” said Nalchajian-Cohen.
The volunteers collected food as well as hygienic goods. All of the donations made at the Red Lot went directly to the Student Cupboard, an on campus resource for students. The Student Cupboard provides nearly 5,000 students with free food and hygiene products per month.
