CSU FRESNO’S PLANETARIUM
By Sabrina Kumar
Many people are not aware that Fresno has an “out of this world” planetarium at Fresno State. The Downing Planetarium is adjacent to the Science 2 building and is part of the Physics department. Dr. Steve White, who teaches the introduction to astronomy course at Fresno State, hosts the shows at the planetarium.
“It’s nice to see the different planets and moons with the Newtonian telescope,” White says.
The planetarium hosts astronomy shows on Fridays and Saturdays each month, with two shows open to the public. White says the Friday show is popular.
The planetarium displays a 13-inch Newtonian telescope before and during the Friday night public shows. Viewing through the telescope is free, even for those who don’t plan to attend the shows.
The planetarium is a good alternative for those who are burned out on going bowling or to the movies. The planetarium staff wants the community to learn more about astronomy.
“Many people don’t know we have a planetarium in Fresno, but it’s been here for 18 years now,” says Hayley Bishop, one of the student employees. Bishop says a visit to the planetarium is a great way for kids to learn something new about space.
The shows rotate on a yearly basis. “Whenever we have shows, I’ll try to post posters or mention it for people to come and visit,” Diego says. They also have discounted tickets for Fresno State students.
