DEBUNKING THE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT WITCHCRAFT

Many people have misconceptions about wicca and witchcraft. These misconceptions can be influenced by the media and different images portraying witches–such as green faces and long pointy black hats. I spoke to Olivia Estrada and Christopher Adams to help debunk some of the misconceptions about wicca and witchcraft.

“Spells are really just doing something ritualistic, with a chant and having an intention and that’s a lot like meditation,” Estrada said. She first became interested in wicca after practicing yoga and meditation, which she says have similar structures such as having a clear intention. Estrada has performed a spell to improve her focus, which she says worked for her. However, she says the same results could also be achieved through meditation.

The process of doing a spell often involves colored candles. Estrada says each color has a different meaning.

“Whether it’s friendship love or family love or if you want to strengthen the bonds in your own relationship, you would obviously use a red or a pink candle. Green relates to good luck,” Olivia explains as she talks about how the colors correlate with the intention for the spell. Some spells are also herbal which use plants such as lavender. There is much more to wicca than most people know. Find out more by listening to the podcast.
