SPRING FOOTBALL QUARTERBACK COMPETITION

Fresno State football head coach Jeff Tedford is looking for his next starting quarterback for the 2019 season.

There are three quarterbacks vying for the starting job: two redshirt freshmen, Steven Comstock and Ben Wooldridge, and senior Jorge Reyna.

Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb believes the spot is there for the taking for one of the three.

“I think it is wide open,” Grubb said. “I think that is something that continues to be obviously a competition daily. Not just on what routes they are throwing and how they are throwing them, but being the voice and leader of this offense.”

Reyna had a voice as a leader last year playing in 11 games as the backup quarterback. For head coach Jeff Tedford, it is time for Reyna to take the next step in the quarterback process.

“Jorge has been in that role as a backup before but now all of a sudden he is getting more reps,” Tedford said. “So it is a process for all of them.”

Reyna embraces the competition and wants the best signal caller to win the job.

“It has to be an open competition,” Reyna said. “It is healthy for us. The job that we said in the quarterback group is we want to make each other better for the team. It doesn’t matter who is going to be the starter, we just want to support and make sure whoever starts is the best for the team.”
