Fresno State resources for student-parents
Typically you would see a college student walking by themselves from class to class. However some students are also parents, and oftentimes have their kids walking along just beside them.
Evelin Espinoza is a sophomore and is a student-parent at Fresno State. She gave birth to her son, who is now one, during her first semester of college.
“The night after I had my baby I was doing homework and submitting some other quizzes for some other classes,” says Espinoza. “I came back to school the second week [after] I had my baby.”
Espinoza said the Student Cupboard has helped her by providing free diapers, free baby food, and baby wipes.
“I could get diapers once every month which is really helpful for me because I didn’t have to spend money on diapers out of my own pocket” Espinoza said.
Throughout campus, there are also lactation stations, baby changing stations, expecting mothers parking, and a day care.
“All three of our sites give priority to student parents who are part-time or full-time enrolled,” said Brittney Randolph, director of the Programs For Children. “So most students have their children here and they are either free or reduced.”
Faculty also plays a role in making these resources available for students.
“I started working on various tasks throughout campus to try to provide more resources and communicate what we already have for student parents” said Larissa Mercado-Lopez, a women’s studies associate professor.
These student-parents are doing double duty and are determined to reach their goal.
