Fresno State Graduate Offering Free Workouts

The COVID-19 shelter-in-place order has shut down gyms, but staying fit is still important. One Fresno State graduate is helping students stay fit at home.

Kinesiology graduate Morgan Ashley Spiegel is offering students a workout routine at no cost.

She posted her offer on the Fresno State Book, Trade and Advice Facebook group.

“Monday and Thursday are always going to be total body, and then Tuesday and Friday are always going to be lower body,” Spiegel says. “Wednesday and Saturday are always going to be upper body.”

She is offering free live workouts through her Facebook page.

The post in the Facebook group exploded with over 150 likes and more than 50 comments.

Spiegel says you do not need equipment or a yoga mat to do the workouts.

“‘You don’t have any dumbbells,’ OK grab a water bottle. You don’t have a water bottle, grab a fur baby, okay grab your cat, grab your dog. You don’t have that, grab your actual child. Okay don’t have that, grab a vacuum. Like everyone has to have a vacuum, right? So, there’s so many different options. We have to get creative, but that’s the fun. That’s the fun part,” Spiegel. says.

The workouts are 30 minutes and are open to everyone.

“The workout schedule was intimidating, but after talking to people, my nerves calmed down a little bit more,” says Karen Elizabeth Chavez, a participant in the workouts. “And then on top of that, it’s not mandatory.”

Before COVID-19, kinesiology student Kassidy Chang was going to the gym regularly for about two hours a day.

“I do like home workouts,” Chang says. “They are mainly inspired by like people on Instagram or like on YouTube workouts.”

The importance of it all is staying active.

“I want everyone to just understand that there’s hope. There’s a way to get through this, especially without it damaging our brain and damaging what we think,” Spiegel says. “I think the solution is exercise our brain.”
