Fresno Unified superintendent stays connected to the community
Staying connected is a priority for Fresno Unified Superintendent Bob Nelson. He is interacting with his students through story time on YouTube.
Nelson began The Reading Series during the first week of the nationwide shutdown. Each week he uploads a video of himself reading a children’s book. He says the outcome was “bigger than he originally planned.”
The most rewarding part of this has been “the parents’ and students’ reactions,” Nelson said.
Brittney Watters is a parent in the Fresno Unified School District. She was emotionally impacted by the way her daughters Aubrey and Ava reacted when they saw Nelson–someone familiar from school.
“I cried. I was bawling my eyes out. Aubrey and Ava were so happy, but I was crying because I never recognized how important the human connection is,” Watters said.
