Finding a Job During COVID

The pandemic has kept many businesses closed or open with limitations for months, causing a lot of people, including Fresno State students, to lose their jobs.

Although it can hard looking for a new job, students should know that Fresno State is here to help. Debbie Young is the Director of the Career Development Center which also runs the Money Management Center. She understands that students have a lot of questions. Her team is more than happy to answer them.

“The career development center is here to help students while they’re in college with part-time employment, on-campus employment, finding internships, getting work experience that you need before you graduate, and also helping you look for resources and industries that are actually hiring,” Young said.

The Career Development Center is located in the Frank W. Thomas building in room 103 at Fresno State. Currently, appointments are only accepted virtually through Zoom.

One of the many Fresno State students currently on unemployment is psychology major Samantha Zendejas who has been out of a job since March. With the stress of watching kids and going to school, she is having a hard time finding new employment.

“I had to look for another job at least part-time but with three children now to watch, it made it harder to go back to school and find a job too,” Zendejas said.

While many students are watching their unemployment run out, the Career Development Center can help them plan ahead.

“When you collect unemployment you are supposed to be looking for work and I know it’s a lot of work trying to look for a job. Plus you’re going to school, but we have the resources to help you with that,” Young said.
