Student Anxiety With Online Learning
Adapting to online learning can affect a student’s mental health. It can increase anxiety for young students especially.
Students like Rocio Mejia, who has always been a shy person, struggle with distance learning. She does not turn on her camera during class.
“I don’t like having it on because I’m shy and I’m uncomfortable showing my face when nobody else does in my class,” said Rocio, a seventh grader at San Joaquin Elementary.
Speaking up when she needs help in class is also hard to do for Rocio.
“I don’t ask, but if I get lucky someone else asks and that’s how I understand,” she said.
Jonathan Sadie, the director at Club Z Tutoring Service in Fresno said that the connection between a student and an educator is important.
But with online learning that interaction is harder to obtain.
Normalizing their feelings can help young students improve in their academics and believe in themselves.
“The first thing is to allow the student to understand that their position is totally normal,” said Sadie.
