Indoor Fitness Allowed With Precautions

After being shutdown nearly continuously since March due to COVID-19, fitness centers reopened in October once Fresno moved into the red tier. That means gyms, dance studios, and martial arts schools are open for business.

“We were two or three months in and then they finally let us open back up for I think it was about three weeks, and then all of a sudden we had to shut back down again but this time there was no light at the end of the tunnel. It was just you’re shut down until further notice,” said Austin Carter, owner of Carter Taekwondo.

Gyms have rules to follow to remain open. They may only run at 10 percent capacity. Patrons must follow social distancing guidelines, wear a mask, get temperature checks, and sanitize hands.

Carter explained the measures that he is taking to remain open and ensure the safety of his students: “We’ve marked out every six feet on the mats so that whatever drills we’re doing, people can stay spaced out. We’re also disinfecting the mats, sanitizing them, mopping, all the equipment is being wiped down and checking so that we’re doing the best we can to stop the spread”.

As long as Fresno County does not fall back into the purple tier, fitness centers such as gyms, dance studios, and martial arts school will be able to remain open.
