Donate to help solve the California Blood Shortage
The Central California Blood Center is experiencing a blood shortage. School drives are a major supplier of blood, but because of COVID-19 they cannot happen. With the colder season fast approaching, the center is in need of more donors.
The Donation Center makes it easy for new donors to walk in anytime; just a simple form is required. Returning donors can book an appointment online on their website.
Donor Engagement officer Alis Mejia stressed how crucial is it to have an adequate supply of blood on hand. “Blood is only good for 42 days so we are constantly going through blood and we also service 19 hospitals in our Central Valley. So if donors don’t come to donate we are in big trouble and the hospitals are in big trouble,” Mejia said.
The required waiting period between donations is eight weeks, which is why the need for more donors is essential. Kevin Hernandez is one of those returning donors who makes it a priority to come back when possible.
“I think it is always important to try and help others simply because it’s just a simple thing to do. And it feels good to know me giving up something of mine will help a bunch of other people and probably save their lives,” Hernandez said.
Every year the blood center drives their mobile unit to the Fresno State campus for a big blood drive. This year, they are encouraging students, staff, and alumni to participate by visiting a donation center. The Fresno State blood drive ends November 21st.
