LGBTQ Voters React to the 2020 U.S. Election
As the results of the 2020 presidential election continue to be sorted out, one group has already begun thinking about what lies ahead: members of the LGBTQ community.
“I believe it’s gonna take a lot of hard work for us to continue to move forward in the LGBTQ community… Trans women, especially trans women of color, are being murdered at unprecedented rates,” shared Angela Turner, a 45-year-old self-identified fem-presenting Queer.
The recent confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to The Supreme Court has been a point of particular concern, with some voters fearing for the continuance of marriage equality and other federal protections for LGBTQ citizens.
While President-elect Jospeh R. Biden did receive substantial public support from various LGBTQ organizations and activists, some voters in the community have not been as confident that the nation will heal its current divide for the foreseeable future.
Junnie Pruneda, a 24-year-old self-identified Queer lamented, “In the near future, I think nothing is really going to be done because I feel like, at this point, nobody wants to compromise anymore because we compromise, we compromise, we compromise and [LGBTQ citizens] still get the short end of the stick.”
More information on LGBTQ issues and access to other local resources are available through the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission’s LGBTQ+ Resource Center. Though in-person operations remain on hold due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, services are still available via their website at fresnoeoc.org/lgbtq.
