Christmas Tree Lane Opens
Every year, Van Ness Avenue turns into Christmas Tree Lane in December. It’s a big commitment for the people who live along Van Ness, putting up Christmas lights and other decorations.
Joseph Yrulegui, who lives on the lane, expects a big turnout this year of people looking for a way to get into the Christmas spirit.
“I think this year it’s going to be packed with cars because people are looking for something to be happy about, to be joyful about, and I think Christmas is the perfect holiday for that.” stated Yrulegui.
It’s also a time to remember safety. Opening night began with heartbreak when a van got stuck on railroad tracks waiting to drive down the lane and was hit by a train. A 5-year-old boy died.
There are also changes due to COVID-19, including the elimination of walking nights to keep residents healthy.
Christmas Tree Lane is open Sunday through Thursday from 6pm – 10pm and Fridays and Saturday from 6pm – 11pm through Christmas night.
