Children’s book published by Fresno Unified school counselor
A children’s book written by a local social worker and Fresno state alumna, Deshunna Ricks, Ph.D., is teaching young kids that they are valuable.
The book was inspired by Ricks’ childhood. She was placed in foster care at a young age and had to overcome many obstacles. Growing up without her biological parents made her question her value. She believes it is important for children to read stories similar to their lives in books.
“I’ve been a counselor with Fresno Unified for the last seven years and I work in West Fresno and a lot of the kids that I serve have the same stories as me,” said Ricks.
The book includes an affirmation that Ricks hopes will help children understand that they are valuable even at a young age.
