Animal support during the pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought grief and loneliness to many lives as social activities are cut off. Some have found a solution by getting a pet.
Megan Bowen decided to adopt an animal companion to help her cope. “Having him has helped me to not struggle as much,” said Bowen of her dog.
Communication with a new friend leads to a variety of physiological and psychological benefits. Fresno State psychology professor Amanda Mortimer agrees that this kind of support is extremely beneficial, especially during the pandemic.
“I do think as things are more stressful now it is more important to have that kind of support,” said Professor Mortimer.
Pets can help with mental health and provide comfort, but it is important to remember that a support animal is not just a friend. There are responsibilities that go along with being a pet provider. Do some research before adding a new friend to your family.
