Meet Ashley Carter, Aspiring Reporter
There are a lot of young, hopeful reporters out there, but probably very few that can land a clean kick to the head. Ashley Carter would be part of an exclusive group that can do both.
Carter, an aspiring reporter entering her final semester at Fresno State, is also a black belt in Taekwondo and an instructor at her family’s Taekwondo studio. Her parent’s dojo, Carter Taekwondo, has been in Fresno for as long as she can remember, spending hours upon hours there. She refers to it as her second home. Taekwondo has given her the ability to travel across the country, participating in different events and competitions.
When asked about if she felt like reporting had been something she had been drawn too, her answer was a bit of a surprise. “It actually hasn’t,” Carter said.
She had no intention of of working in broadcasting until she was thrown into a job for the Gunslingers, a sprint car racing team. She was asked to do pit reporting , asking drivers about their runs. After the first day, she realized a new love.
“I just went in and kind of had fun with it for the day and I went home and kind of decided that was something I really liked and really enjoyed doing,” said Carter. “So that kind of caused me to look into okay where can this take me and where can I go from here.”
She applied to Fresno State to become a better reporter. Now, just a few weeks from graduating, she has her goals clearly in sight: She hopes to become a reporter for TV news.
