Farmers Markets during the pandemic
Many farmers markets have been open throughout the pandemic. According to the CDC, “Across the United States, farmers markets have been named an essential service because of their role in supporting local farms and providing communities access to fresh, healthy food during the pandemic.”
In North Fresno, shoppers have been attending the River Park farmers market. However while some customers are mindful of COVID precautions others are not.
Jennifer White is the market manager. “It’s definitely been a challenge to have everyone wear a face mask and have everyone stay social distant. That’s probably been the biggest challenge as soon as all of this started,” said White.
Mathew Bethea is a shopper at the market. “It’s interesting since a lot of people aren’t wearing mask. It’s a little concerning at points, but its nice to try some food and support local trucks. It’s fun,” said Bethea.
Local gourmet food truck vendors are tested regularly before going out. Face masks and social distancing are enforced for all vendors.
Food sales have gone down compared to pre-COVID times. That’s why the market started to accept a new program for families on a strict budget. “I want to encourage people if they are not aware of it, is we accept the EBT program. We transfer EBT funds to coins that can be used at vendors as well as match $10 for fruits and vegetables,” explained White.
The RiverPark farmers market is open Tuesdays and Saturdays. Vendors and times are located at their Instagram page @riverparkfarmersmarket.
Within the Fresno area there are other markets open on Saturdays and Sundays. Simonian Farms is also open Saturdays. Fort Washington and Clovis are open Sundays. Facial coverings are required to enter, and it is recommended that all food is taken home for eating.
