Sigma Nu Fraternity gives back to the community
By mid-semester, Sigma Nu fraternity typically has participated in and hosted several philanthropic events with other organizations in Greek life at Fresno State. However, like the majority of other in-person events, these group events were sidelined by the pandemic, leaving Sigma Nu to find a new way to give back and stay connected with their community.
“We lost opportunities that we were so used to and that were normal for everyone,” said Mikey Enriquez, Vice President of Sigma Nu. “We wanted to still do something that we could do mainly in isolation, yet still go out and connect with people.”
With this idea in mind, the brothers decided they would construct care packages to distribute to the homeless in their area. Each care package contained a pair of socks, nail clippers, a box of tuna and crackers, cleaning wipes, lip balm, and bandages.
The brothers drove up and down Blackstone Ave. in central Fresno looking for homeless folks to deliver the care packages to. Brother Jesus Morales said, “If we are looking to serve these people one day, we at least have to communicate with them. So doing little things like this ya know, handing out goodie bags like what we’re doing right now. It’s definitely humbling.”
