Fresno Earth Day 2021
Earth Day was April 22, and Fresno’s 11th annual celebration was held virtually for the second year due to COVID.
There were community activities to create environmental awareness leading up to the virtual events. For example, Fresno Earth Day teamed up with Tree Fresno to plant trees around town. There will be another tree planting event April 24.
They have also teamed up with the U.S Green Building Council to have a socially distanced movie screening on regenerative agriculture called “Kiss The Ground.” Before the screening there was a panel discussion about environmental awareness.
“So we wanted to try to mix it up with having in person, with some of the organizations that have already been planning to do in person events in a safe manner,” explained Destiny Rodriguez, one of the Earth Day organizers.
The movie showing had guides informing attendees where to sit. Popcorn was also handed out with QR Codes to join the online chat forum.
“So this year for Earth Day, you know, we are in this time of global awareness and it is challenging to to step out,” said Rodriguez. “But we wanted to take time to really show what people are doing in our community, particularly organizations, nonprofits, civic and environmental.”
With over thirteen organizations, including nonprofits and advocacy groups, presenting this year, Fresno Earth Day is eager to celebrate and highlight local groups and their current projects focused on sustainability. Fresno State committees will also be presenting, such as the Fresno State UNGC Committee, the Sustainability Club and the Fresno State Student Vegetarian Association.
