The verdict heard around the world
There are a lot of emotions that came with the guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin, which came nearly a year after the death of George Floyd.
Chauvin faced three charges in court: second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
After ten hours of deliberation from the 12-person jury, the verdict was announced: guilty on all three counts.
Immediately following the verdict, celebrations erupted outside the courtroom.
“This feels like a win, but it’s also a bittersweet moment because it’s like, finally we got one win, but like this is something that we all saw on live TV happen for nine minutes,” said Fresno resident, Symmone Woods. “So it’s like for this to carry on for this long, it just feels like what was there to investigate?”
The video of the former officer kneeling on George Floyd’s neck was viewed over 1 billion times by people throughout the entire world.
Chauvin is now in jail, where he will remain until the judge sentences him in June. Minnesota law states he could get at least 12 and a half years per murder charge.
