Skating Is More Than A Hobby

To most people, grabbing a skateboard and skating around is a hobby. Whether it’s skating in front of your home, a skate park, or around town. Skating is more than that. It is a lifestyle that helps people get through and have fun in life.

Horacio Huerta, a Delano native, uses skating as a way of relaxing. He says skating helps with the littlest things, like enjoying free time. It can also be deeper than that to the point where it also helps reduce stress.

“If I feel sad and I come over here, all that mindset goes away and I just focus on skating,” Huerta said about the skate park.

Skating is often looked at as an activity for kids and teenagers. But there are plenty of older skaters who still enjoy the feeling of riding around. Although age plays a factor, no one is ever too old to pick up a skateboard and continue riding.

“I have my own family to take care of with school and work being piled up as well,” said Didier Aburto, a Delano native. “Some people could say I am just getting older, but I still try to pick up that skateboard as much as I can and feel like I’m still that kid that was constantly doing the craziest things at the skate park.”

Regardless of age or situation, for many skaters it’s not a hobby. It’s a lifestyle that reminds them of their roots.
