Veteran reflects on September 11 attacks
It has been 20 years since the September 11 attacks, but it feels like yesterday. A sobering time for people all over the country who came together to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost.
“Patriotism, community, and giving back,” said Micheal Black, president of the Kiwanis Club of Fresno. “We saluted our veterans, law enforcement, people, first responders, and we paid homage to all of those who have paid the supreme sacrifice of our freedom.”
Adolph Reyes is a Vietnam veteran and a veteran of Desert Storm. Although the attacks happened 20 years ago, he said 9/11 is something that he will never forget.
“I told my wife, ‘That’s a movie. Change the channel that’s only a movie,” he remembers. “I couldn’t believe it. I saw the second plane hit, and I knew it was very serious–yes.”
At first, Reyes was not sure if what he saw on TV was actually happening.
“I knew we were in a completely different situation. It really affected me bad,” Reyes said.
However, after serving 34 years of service and protecting the nation, Reyes now enjoys being part of the Vietnam Veterans band.
“I’ve been with them for about four years, and we’re growing every year. It’s very patriotic for me. I enjoy doing it,” Reyes said.
The Kiwanis of Fresno said they look forward to having the Valley Heroes Parade, which is an annual event.
