SPCA Hosts “Spooktacular” Adoption Promotion

No tricks, all treats are happening at the Central California SPCA this month. The SPCA is hosting its annual Halloween adoption event called “Spooktacular” for dogs that have been in the shelter for over 30 days.

Local shelters in the Fresno and Clovis area continue to fill up. The SPCA hopes its Spooktacular event will help place pets in loving homes. In honor of Halloween, pet adoptions will cost only $59. Each adoption includes a spay/neuter, Fresno city dog license, vaccinations, dewormer, flea and tick preventative, a free vet exam and a microchip.

“It’s always nice to come in and see one of them adopted,” said Annette Peters, SPCA Shelter Operations Manager. “This is why we hold the promotion to hope that all of them go home.”

About 20 long-term dogs are waiting to find their forever home before the holidays. Many of these pets have been getting dropped off because of how big they get and how aggressive they can be. SPCA employees noticed that these animals aren’t aggressive. They were just never properly trained.

For many of these employees, the connection they build with these animals makes it hard to see them go.

“You get to build a special bond with the dogs,” said Carissa Contreras, an SPCA employee. “Everyone’s different so you definitely get to experience that.”

Many of these animals rely on local volunteers to give walks and play before they find a new home. Due to the high volume of animals being brought in, volunteers are unable to keep up. Two chihuahuas were dropped off earlier this week after being found on the side of the road and are waiting to be a part of somebody’s Halloween plans.

The SPCA is located at 103 South Hughes Ave in Fresno and can be reached at (559)233-7722.
