A Day in the Life of Victor-E III
We all know our beloved live mascot, Victor-E Bulldog III, but have you ever wondered what he does day to day?
Victor-E is not your average bulldog. He has a job as the live mascot for Fresno State.
“Victor-E Bulldog III came to campus in June of 2015,” says his handler Gina de Young. “So he’s pretty much been trained and primed and ready to be mascot his entire life. So that was a really big campus celebration when he came, and we’re coming up on almost seven years of service to the university.”
Victor-E’s work day is busy. Loud music, crowds of people gathered around him waiting to take pictures with him or just to meet and show him love. Victor-E loves being the center of attention and getting belly rubs.
Lots of training and practice has set him up for success and happiness when interacting with students and the community.
“Victor is great at his job,” De Young says. “But I think that, really, Victor-E’s health and his comfort is always the top priority, so we never ask Victor-E to do anything that might make him uncomfortable. We’re always really aware of his cues. So if he is showing us that he doesn’t like doing something, we never force him to do anything, even if it would be good content.”
His favorite hobby on campus is chasing squirrels around the fountain. But no worries. No squirrels have been harmed during Victor-E playtime.
At the end of his work day, Victor-E gets to head home, have his favorite snack, peanut butter, maybe have a bath, or just hang out with his sister, Abby.
