Groundhog Day ceremony
Central Valley
Feb 17, 2022 Cristina Ledezma -

Six More Weeks of Winter?

Groundhog Day is celebrated every February 2 in the US. According to folklore, the groundhog tells us whether we should expect six more weeks of winter or get ready for an early spring. When the groundhog saw his shadow in early February, it meant six more weeks of winter. But just how accurate was it?

KMPH Fox 26 weatherman Justin Willis says the average temperature in the San Joaquin Valley isn’t the best groundhog prediction weather.

“Our normal high around this time of year is like 59, 60, 61,” Willis says.

It’s much colder in other parts of the country such as the East and South.

“Since I have been here, I have already experienced 2 winter storms,” says a homeowner in Austin, Texas.

The groundhog’s predictions seem to be more accurate in the part of the country where the Groundhog Day ceremonies took place, such as western Pennsylvania. For the San Joaquin Valley, it has been sunny for the past few days now and seems to be staying that way.
