University students receive COVID Relief Funds
As the pandemic continues, students will be receiving another round of funds from the American Rescue Plan along and the Department of Education. The funds are for students around the country who attend a university and need emergency funds to cover expenses during the pandemic.
Although the money is supposed to be for emergencies, many believe that students who don’t need the money will take advantage of it.
“I think it is great because of the students who actually need it, but you are really hurting the ones who are taking advantage of the opportunity,” says business professor, Ruben Guerrero.
There is no question some students will take advantage of the money, but students at Fresno State are relying on that money to help them cover anything at any cost.
College students are known for having little money especially if they live around campus, leaving them to use the money for something good to help them out.
“Everyone’s got rent. A lot of people pay for their own school, food as well. There’s a lot of expenses that really add up,” says Fresno State student Blake Scaife.
There are also students who have jobs outside of school. However, sometimes the money they earn is not enough. Especially if the hours are cut short for them.
Student Brendan Sanders had too much time on his hands because of not being at work and is patiently waiting for the money to arrive.
“I have been working less, so by getting this relief fund, it would help me get more money in order to pay off different things that I have, like bills,” Sanders said.
Over $198 million will get out to students who qualify for pandemic expenses. Students are eligible by their enrollment status as well as the Title IV program. Students who did not qualify have time to fill out a survey sent by email to explain if they have a pandemic expense.
