Fresno State Athletics Creative

Within the walls of Fresno State’s North gym is the Athletics office, housing the creative team. The small group behind all of the social media and promotional content for the school. This is where the creative team edits clips they’ve shot from school events. Whether it’s live game footage, or even the fans in the stands, they get it all. The behind-the-scenes work happens here, at times hours of editing goes into these short videos.

Andrew Worth is the director of creative services. In other words, he’s the head of the creative department.

“There’s a ton of stuff that goes into it,” Worth said. “Obviously, the shooting and editing portion is one piece of it. But, you have to know the team, you have to know who’s playing, who isn’t playing, people relevant to each team.”

With all of these responsibilities flying around in Worth’s head, it’s very clear he wouldn’t be able to do this all alone. This brings in creative content producer Matt Murphy, Worth’s right-hand man. Murphy’s role changes to whatever is needed at the time, even being in charge of the student interns in some situations.

“My role is to help with any projects we’re working on. I’m independent on a lot of that stuff, like say basketball, other sports like tennis. Me and him take football, and we’ll tackle that together because that’s a big beast.”

Even while they take on these projects together, they can’t be everywhere at once, getting all the shots they want. So they offer an internship to students interested in filming sports, video editing, and visual storytelling. Using these student interns allows for more variety in footage.

Riley Born is their longest-tenured intern, having started during basketball season.

“I really enjoy basketball,” Born said. “That’s the sport I’ve done the most of. I’ve had some of my best shots, my biggest moments there. I can think of one impressive shot that’s up there on the intro board for the Save Mart Center of Orlando Robinson cocking back behind his head for a dunk. It’s those moments I get proud of.”

The intern experience is very hands-on in the creative department because they do really need their help. Worth and Murphy are more than willing to assist newcomers and catch them up to speed. After all, quality of content is still important and they put a lot of pride in what they do.
