Track and Field Record Falls After 37 Years
Cierra Jackson broke the school shot-put record on her fifth attempt at the Washington State University Invitational, throwing a 16.74m/54-11.25.
This surpasses the previous record of 16.34m/53-7.5 that had stood since 1986, held by Dot Jones.
“I went out there, I trusted it and it all came together. I threw 16.74m! I didn’t believe it at that moment, but when I looked at the screen and it was up there I was like oh my goodness!” said Jackson.
Jackson competes in the throwing events on the Fresno State Track and Field team, and is in her third year in the Valley.
She hopes to achieve the national standard for discus and go to nationals, held in June.
“I would say depending on how I feel that day, usually discus is my best event. If I had to pick, I would definitely choose discus. Shot-put is just like, its there. I can do good at it, but I definitely am a discus thrower,” Jackson added.
