Students concerned about safety when using crosswalks at Fresno State
Traffic at Fresno State is busy and hectic during school hours. Drivers are in a rush, and many pedestrians feel pressured to walk faster in crosswalks to avoid getting hit.
“We do see vehicle versus pedestrian accidents every semester,” said Amy Luna, Fresno State Police Department public information officer.
Vehicles must yield to pedestrians, who have the right of way in any marked or unmarked crosswalk, according to California law. Any driver who violates the right of way can be fined a whopping $238.
“On Woodrow, I would say they’re a lot more aggressive,” said Ian Tell, agriculture business major at Fresno State. “You have to be pretty like aggressive, I would say, crossing the street.”
