New Flower Market showcases local growers from the Central Valley
After spending decades as a flower grower in Fresno County and selling edible flowers from her shop, Magnolia’s Yarden, Danielle Fischer had a new vision.
“As the agricultural capital, I saw a need in the Central Valley to bring a flower market here, and I knew that would be my next step,” said Fischer.
The Flower Market opened in the Sun Stereo Warehouse in downtown Fresno last month, providing a unique experience, where locals can build their own floral arrangements from a large selection of unique flowers.
“People love to bring out their children, their mom, their friends as a group. It’s an outing to gather and just enjoy the beautiful downtown Fresno,” said Fischer.
After experiencing flower markets in San Fransisco and Los Angeles, Fischer is proud to bring the flower market to downtown Fresno, showcasing other local growers.
Many locals, like Fresno State English professor Sean Gordon, prefer the Flower Market to nearby chains because of the locally sourced flowers.
“It’s cheap and whatnot, and the flowers are nice, but you don’t know really where they are coming from,” said Gordon. “It’s not an environmentally conscious way of shopping for flowers. So learning that there was a local flower market with local growers, I want to support that.”
Reyna Cozad is the owner of Blooms on Lincoln Ave and has been growing cut flowers for seven years. Cozad has been selling her flowers at the Flower Market since it opened.
“When you get a flower from the grocery store, you’re getting a flower that has been on trucks and airplanes and just a lot of transportation to get to where they are,” said Cozad. “We freshly pick your flowers straight from our farm, and it’s already accustomed to our climate so it tends to last a little bit longer.”
Those who stop by can grab a bucket, choose their flowers from the different vendors, and then have them wrapped and ready to take home.
You can support local florists every Saturday at the Sun Stereo Warehouse from 8 a.m. to noon from now until October.
