Behind the scenes of Fresno State Focus crew
The Fresno State Focus crew, also known as MCJ 123, is the backbone of Fresno State Focus Newscast which is the MCJ 128 capstone class. The crew makes sure the show goes on as smoothly as possible.
They handle the cameras, audio, monitors, give cues, and direct the show. When things get crazy on set or there are any technical issues, Terry Dolph who is the engineer and a Fresno State alumnus, is there to help. He’s served as studio engineer for nine years.
“It’s been a real blast,” Dolph said. “It’s the studio that I learned in 1974 and ’76. So coming back has been really fun.”
Several students on the crew returned this semester for a second round. They mentored the new students who worked with them behind the scenes.
Emily Crabtree is taking this class for the first time. She served in many roles and said she enjoyed the craziness that goes on before and after the newscast.
“In 123, you really build a team,” Crabtree said. “Because, I always talk about this class, it’s kinda like the military like you go through it together. And like you come out stronger as a group and that’s really what you learn in this class.”
Both MCJ 123 and MCJ 128 ended this semester on high note with their last show in May 3. They created a strong bond and are now ready for what’s to come in the future.
