Student returns to his native country to study abroad
Carlos Rene Castro is a junior at Fresno State majoring in digital journalism. He was born in Honduras. At the age of five, his parents migrated to the United States in search for a better life for their children.
Now, thanks to the California Mexico Study Center Program, he is going back to his home country to study abroad. He’s looking forward to seeing his family that he hasn’t seen in years.
“I’m so excited to have this experience as a more mature person, especially with goals of pursuing journalism,” Castro said.
He found out about this opportunity from his film instructor Samuel Contreras, who knew Castro was a perfect candidate for this chance to study abroad.
“I think life is about taking a chance, right?” Contreras said. “There’s a saying in Spanish, ‘El que no apuesta, no gaña.’ You don’t gamble; you don’t win, right?”
Castro wants to share his native country story, but he also plans to fundraise to help the community. He will be writing a paper about his experience, and it will be published on the California Mexico Center program.
You will be able to read his paper next year when he gets back from his study abroad..
Castro has created a gofundme page, Dreamer Seeks to Reconnect With His Roots, to raise money for his trip, he has raised $4,500 of the $5,000 needed for the program.
