AI In Journalism
Artificial Intelligence is prevalent just about everywhere these days. From the Writers Guild of America strike to the way students learn in classrooms. What about Journalism? Whether it’s digital, print or your local TV news anchors, AI affects the industry.
The artificial intelligence program Chat GTP has been used by an abundance of people for getting information, and some people use it for story ideas. But is it ethical to use AI?
Rene Rodriguez, a broadcast journalism student at Fresno State, said that he stays away from using AI because of possible misinformation.
“The AI itself can be compromised so you never know when the actual artificial intelligence, the algorithm can produce misleading or biased information.”
Some students say that because of where AI gets data, it’s best to stay away from using it. Kat Aleci, who like Rodriguez is also a broadcast journalism student, said AI also lacks creativity.
“In creating things, l think it’s better to capture genuineness and not something that’s just been regurgitated from whatever sources AI pulls from,” Aleci said.
That is a valid worry as well. According to an article in WIRED, AI maybe used for creating things such as fake news articles and stories. That being said, it’s often not hard to distinguish stories that are done by AI and stories that are real.
Donald Munro, a journalism professor at Fresno State, said that “usually stories that are written by AI are really bad.”
One of the main problems with AI in general is that it’s increasing at an alarming rate. According to FORBES, the use of AI will have a “21% net increase to the United States GDP by 2030.”
