Halloween Safety
At many colleges, the weekend leading up to Halloween is known to be full of different parties and events to celebrate the holiday.
Fresno State senior Lileana Garza says she doesn’t let her guard down when going out with friends.
“I still try to keep aware of my surroundings like who’s passing me like watching out especially even for my friends, too. If there is people looking around. Just like stuff like that,” said Garza.
Like many students, Garza occasionally ends up walking late at night to get to and from different events. Making sure she is safe is her top priority.
Campus Police public safety officer Amy Luna says it’s really important that you make a plan and communicate that plan with your friends and family. That way, they’ll know where you will be and with whom. Also, remember to be careful when dressing up.
“We like to just kind of discourage any kind of costume that would have any sort of weapon that could look real or it could be mistaken and just be mindful of your surroundings,” said Luna.
Between the holiday weekend and the homecoming football game, campus and the surrounding areas will be packed. It is important to always use crosswalks that are well-lit when crossing the street.
Fresno State also offers blue light emergency phones on campus if you are in immediate danger. The Campus Police Department is available 24/7 if you feel unsafe or see any suspicious activity.
