New Minor, New Memories
Fresno State is located in the heart of the Central Valley, and in the heart of the Central Valley are a plethora of diverse and unique people, all looking for their history to be shared. That is exactly what the new LGBTQ2+ Studies Minor at Fresno State is hoping to do, tell the stories of a marginalized group that is often overlooked.
“K through 12, we celebrate all sorts of different diverse communities and their histories, but rarely do we hear about LGBTQ people,” said Dr. Michael Lee Gardin a new professor at Fresno State. “So rarely are we going to see the Stonewall riots appear in a history book,”
The mission of the LGBTQ2+ Minor is to introduce students to and highlight the contributions of the Queer Community as well as provide them with the necessary experience when working with the Queer Community.
“It’s just being able to see yourself within those academic spaces,” said Harley Calleros Cuardos. “That not a lot of personally, I think not a lot of classes and educators have given me the opportunity to see and feel.”
