Campus police stepping up safety measures after potential threat
Students were forced to evacuate the Fresno State Residence Dining Hall and their dorm rooms around noon on Thursday because of a potential threat to campus.
Police public information officer Amy Luna says it’s times like these when practice drills are so important.
“The purpose of the evacuation and assembly points is for everyone to go to the same place so we can get more information right, whether it be more information about what’s going on, whether it’s clear to go back in or if you need to go to a secondary location because the incident took longer than anticipated,” Luna said.
Another way to stay informed about campus safety is by paying attention to the Bulldog Alert System and by keeping up with verified Fresno State social media accounts.
With all of this activity, some students, like Tatianna Ortiz, are concerned about who can come onto campus.
“We don’t know who is coming onto campus because anyone can come onto campus whether you’re a student or not, that should be one of the main concerns because we don’t know when there’ll be a threat,” Ortiz said.
Fresno State Police Chief Jen Curwick says every threat is taken seriously. The main priority is that people are safe while on campus.
“Whether it was a credible threat or not, we have to investigate all of them. We have to treat every threat like it’s a credible threat and then go through all of the steps in order to make sure it’s mitigated so that everyone is safe,” Curwick says.
