Cyclist Awareness: Tips On and Around Campus
By: Natalia Mendoza
Fresno, Calif. ( KFSR)—There has been an uptick in the number of bicycle, scooter and skateboard accidents. Here are some tips from the Fresno State police department to help prevent accidents.
Planning ahead is ideal. Bells, helmets, bright attire and reflectors are the most effective ways to prevent accidents on the road.
“One thing is to always wear a helmet. People don’t always like to wear one, but helmets save lives, and they have in the past,” said bicycle mechanic Seth Monty.
Helmets can also prevent serious injuries.
Grad student Cory Rudolph takes many precautions when riding his scooter on campus, especially with their popularity.
“There are so many scooters on campus nowadays, and they go pretty fast. Also, I have to watch out for walkers who are walking toward my direction,” Rudolph said.
Many students ignore the wheels-off. They zoom by fast, leaving many walkers afraid of getting run over. The wheels-off area requires cyclists, scooter users and skateboarders to walk with their modes of transportation.
When riding off campus, cyclists are advised to use the bike lane to prevent any injuries.
“Bicyclists traveling on the road slower than traffic must use the bike lane to prevent any injuries,” according to CALBIKE.COM
Cyclists, scooter users and skateboarders should keep these precautions in mind the next time they are on the road or riding on campus.
