Sleeping pods may be making a comback

In a locked room, on the bottom floor of the University Student Union, are two sleeping pods. They have not been used in years, but they could soon be making a comeback.

Axel Monsisvais, an environmental sciences student, says that having a rest between classes would make things a lot easier.

“I wish I could lay down for just one of the hours I have free,” Monsisvais said.

Years ago, sleeping pods were installed in the USU Recharge Zone for students to take a break while on campus. They’ve been shut down since the school’s remote schoolwork during COVID.

Nowadays, many students don’t even know where they are.

The sleeping pods are still in The Recharge Zone Downstairs in the USU next to the bowling alley.

If you peek through the glass, you can just make them out.

ASI Vice President of Finance Guadalupe Zamudio Telles has been working to bring the sleeping pods back.

“We definitely want to take the right steps and make sure we have the right information so we can get them up and running as soon as possible,” Zamudio Telles said.

Zamudio Telles says they still don’t know where the pods will end up.

“We also had the idea to locate them to different parts of campus, to either the rec center or the Peters Building since they could be utilized more,” she said.

Mass Communication and Journalism major Jacqueline Carrillo says that even though she’s graduating, she thinks the sleeping pods will be great for a lot of students.

“I don’t know if I’ll be able to enjoy it as much, but I think having the pods would be fun. Having headphones on and listening to brown noise would be enough for me,” Carrillo said.

The initiative to bring back the sleeping pods is still in early development, but students should be on the lookout.

There is no reopening date for the pods but keep an eye out on the ASI social media pages for more information.
