Students have strong opinions about AI
For the past year, AI, or artificial intelligence has had everyone talking.
Many students use AI to write essays and other projects by typing the assignment prompt into the program.
Even the writing software Grammarly uses AI to help students find the right tone for what they’re typing.
Mouawangyee says when students use AI, it can save time on assignments.
“That could be in the education world,” says Mouwangyee. “Children will have access to world class education all from the palm of their hand on their phone. They won’t have to hire teachers that have to make lesson plans.”
Artificial intelligence helps computer systems perform challenging tasks that only humans can do, like “recognizing speech, making decisions, and identifying patterns,” according to Coursera.
Using artificial intelligence, people can create things that they cannot come up with just a paper and pencil.
Even TikTok users have been posting fun things like “Your Month, Your Soda Donut,” which can be both fun and not so fun. Critics of AI are concerned the art world is being harmed.
“I think there are some concerns about AI, but I think overall it’s a natural progression for human technology,” says senior kinesiology major Logan Mouawangyee.
He says he uses AI and Chat GPT for creative tasks such as writing letters to professors or taking a multiple-choice quiz.
“That’s not what AI should be doing because there’s still no heart in those creations,” says Clark. “There is a human typing into a computer what to make, but it’s still not a human filming it, writing it, painting, drawing, whatever.”
Art major Sherrie Clark says major animation studios have started to use the system, which has caused artists to lose their jobs.
As more and more people play with AI, we still have a lot to learn from it.
