MCJ students travel to Chile to present at UNESCO conference
The Global Campus Reporting class is headed to Santiago, Chile for the UNESCO Press Freedom Conference. The conference is organized by a specialized agency of the United Nations. Fresno State broadcast journalism professor Hanayo Oya is leading the trip to Chile.
“The students in my MCJ 129, Global Campus Studio class, we have been producing a final project which is a video report about the state of press freedom around the world,” said Professor Hanayo Oya.
The students interviewed journalists from different countries to talk about the significance of press freedom and the future of journalism.
History Professor William Skuban talked with students about what to expect when they arrive in Chile.
“Chile has been very successful among all of Latin American countries,” said Skuban. “One can make the argument that Chile has been the most stable, most democratic, and most developed of Latin American countries. That is not saying that Chile doesn’t have problems, but Chile does have a lot of problems.”
James Sepeda is going on the trip and is looking forward to the learning experience.
“This would be a good opportunity to go, and it was free for us, too, which is kind of nice to travel internationally for free. So, that was cool,” Sepeda said.
The UNESCO Conference will take place on May 2nd through 4th.
