LGBTQ Resources for Fresno State Students
The Fresno State fall semester has started and students are already feeling the rush of anxiety of not knowing where to go for free resources. The Cross-Cultural and Gender Center offers resources for LGBTQ+ students including the Pride Room.
Felix Vargas is the new LGBTQ resource coordinator, who has spent a decade of his life learning new ways to make a more inclusive community.
Vargas enjoys seeing new students using the resources offered on campus.
“The pride room is a safe space that is utilized by students daily where they can come in between classes to come and relax and study and to form a sense of community and belonging,” says Felix.
The pride room is filled with colorful posters promoting events and awareness campaigns that educate the broader campus community about LGBTQ+ issues.
The pride room is a vibrant safe space where every student can embrace their identity, find support, and connect with a community that celebrates love, diversity, and acceptance.
Lexey Jenkins, a former LGBTQ+ programs and services student assistant, says the safe space helps students looking for a sense of belonging.
“Just to give a safe space to be accepted in their identity but it’s not always about specifically talking about identities. It’s just a safe space to relax,” said Jenkins.
Vargas says the pride room has started to see an increase in staff and faculty involvement.
“Last week there was over 40 students. There is also a mix of staff and faculty who stopped by in order to acknowledge and share with students the work they do on campus around LGBTQ+ resources,” said Felix.
The Cross Cultural and Gender Center is planning to bring back LGBTQ+ Prom this coming spring semester. Anyone is welcome.
